LDI Aspects

Teaching
The academic program builds work skills and includes career planning and guidance for future employability. Students are taught core values and shown then, by example, how to live by these values. LDI assists each student to set attainable goals, continued by helping to develop confidence and leadership skills in order for the students to achieve their goals. Also, LDI teaches that daily life is rich with options and that those opportunities are there through the course of a lifetime.

Inspiring: The program builds skills for making healthy life choices as an independent adult with the intent to give students hope. Adult role models are presented that encourage and mentor students. These models reinforce esteem and optimism for the students and their place in the world.

Supporting
The LDI supports personal growth and maturation. Students learn social and relationship skills essential for living and working in the community of their future. The LDI staff serves as advocates for men and women with hidden disabilities. It strives to inform the students' families and the community-at-large of issues that have potential impact on all adults with these conditions.

Building
Personal leadership is reflected through empowerment and self-determination. The LDI staff is mission-focused and dedicated to serving the unique needs of each individual. Its programs are structured and services are personalized, offering simultaneously high standards and flexibility. As LDI mentors its students, they taught and learn to be their own advocate and spokesperson in the adult world.

Student's individual needs and strengths are emphasized through instruction at the LDI. Technology and learning strategies are utilized to enhance the academic development of each student. Flexible scheduling, to accommodate student work schedules and college coursework, is implemented so as no student is left out of academic instruction.
The LDI focuses its classroom instruction on career planning. Students receive training on developing career paths, identifying their own functional strengths and limitations, and employment that suits their temperament. In addition to career planning, students receive advocacy training and instruction on how and when to disclose their disability to an employer, and the laws that protect them from discrimination based on their disability. Social activities are incorporated into the LDI curriculum to facilitate the practical application of social skill instruction. Social interaction is not only encouraged but also instructed and monitored through the auspices of the program. Informal interaction and observation in social situations allows faculty to meet the specific needs of each of the students.

LDI provides an independent, yet supportive living environment. Its program allows students to gain independence through the real life experience of living on their own.

LDI students live in a large, open community complex in one or two-bedroom apartments. They may live alone or with a roommate wherein they are paired by age, lifestyle, and temperament. Often, the students' parents collaborate to provide the apartments with furniture and household necessities.

Residential staff assists students with everyday needs. Staff helps students one-on-one as needed, hold clinics to teach routine cleaning and maintenance techniques, menu planning, and cooking classes. LDI students take pride in being able to perform particular tasks independently. They benefit from the close assistance and supervision.

The foundation of the LDI success is that its staff can and does take the time to form personal relationships with the students and their families. This commitment of service demonstrates to LDI students a positive direction of personal growth where they have the opportunity to experience success as adults.
